Question

I am interested in what the proper length of time that should be made after receiving 50 mc of radioiodine i 131. I have had a total thyroid removal after the left lobe was found to be cancerous in may and the right side being removed in september. Also should a condom be used and for how long?? My partner is 55 years of age and I am 50... past the child bearing years. Thanks.

Response

You will of course be hospitalised for the treatment. They should not let you go home till the radioactivity has fallen to the equivalent of about 30 mci. Thereafter, at home, kissing and sexual intercourse should be avoided for 3 days but is ok after that. There are other precautions of a general nature that you will be advised about.Hope this helps.
